The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is unlike any Zelda game before. After spending a considerable amount of time with this game of the last two weeks, I’ve come up with some tips to help you survive and succeed in this massive game.
In The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, it’s important to explore every corner of the map and interact with as much as possible.
The map in this game is interactive and there are many things to find—Koroks, hidden shrines, and powerful equipment. Many of these things can be found by interacting with your environment in little ways, sort of like tiny micro-puzzles.
For example, there could be a balloon floating that you need to pop or a metal box that you need to put into a certain place to match the pattern on a different part of the canyon wall.
It’s not just the open world where you will need to keep a watch out, many of the shrines will have hidden chests that contain powerful items or equipment that will help you in your journey.
These are often protected by another puzzle that you must figure out before collecting the riches. Remember, these treasure chests are very useful and you should always make an effort to get them on your way to completing the shrine.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is much more dangerous than any previous game in the franchise. Enemies will rush you, several at a time, and they will hit you dealing out large amounts of damage.
In fact, early on in the game many of the enemies can kill you in one shot.
The best way to deal with this is to assess each combat situation in advance. Take a step back, see if there are any environmental factors that can help you—such as explosive barrels or rocks that you can push on your enemies.
Remember, you bow is your friend—if you can snipe out a few of your enemies before they reach you or you reach them, you’ll have a much easier time in close quarters combat.
It’s important to remember that although an enemy might be able to kill you in one hit, it’s always a winnable battle.
If you are one on one with an enemy, you can always beat them by dodging with a perfect dodge which will trigger a flurry rush.
This ability is unlocked early on in the game, and is very important when it comes to beating the tougher enemies.
With enough practice you will be able to take out any enemy no matter how early in the game you are or how low level your gear is, so long as you have enough weapons that will get you through the enemy’s HP before every single one of your weapons breaks.
In order to succeed in Link’s latest adventure, you must focus on upgrading. If you want the best experience that this game has to offer, you should complete every shrine that you encounter—there are 120 in total in the game.
The reason being, is that every four orbs you collect from shrines you can either upgrade your maximum health or maximum stamina—both of which are unbelievable useful in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Korok seeds are the way to upgrade your inventory spaces. If you see a Korok hiding somewhere or a possible hidden Korok—check the most unusual places—you should go out of your way to find it and then upgrade your item slots to get more weapons, shields, or bows.
The ability to hold more items comes in hand, especially when you get towards the tougher parts of the game where your weapons break quite quickly.
As well as increasing your hearts and stamina, you can also upgrade your clothing by visiting a Great Fairy Fountain.
One of the great things about this is that clothing doesn’t degrade, so it will be a permanent increase to your character.
Think of it as getting a health boost, it increases your defense so that enemy attacks aren’t as devastating. If you keep Link upgraded, you will that you have a lot less difficulties in your journey to save Hyrule.
Cooking is an amazing addition to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and is something you must do.
It is the new way that you will restore all of your health, unlike previous games in the series where you would find hearts in the wild or when you defeated enemies.
In this game, your main source of healing is cooked food.
While you are out in the wild, its important to gather as many ingredients as you can and use them wisely to cook meals that are appropriate for the amount of maximum hearts you have.
For example, there is no point in using five prime meats to make a meat skewer that heals for twelve when you have only four to five maximum hearts.
Instead you can use three apples to make a similar fruit which will heal you for three.
In addition to basic healing, the right ingredients in your meals can give you all kinds of boosts.
These boosts range from increased attacks, defense, stamina and stealth ratings to temporary boosts to your maximum hearts and stamina.
You’ll need to experiment and find dishes that work for you for the situations that you find yourself in.
For example, I always make sure that I have food that will increase my stamina so that in a sticky situation when I find myself hanging off of a cliff—I know I am not going to run out of stamina and plummet to my death.
Quite possibly the most important tip of all, is the necessity to manage your equipment well.
Use the gear that is appropriate for the situation that you are in—don’t use your best weapon to kill enemies that have low HP.
On the other hand, you shouldn’t refuse to use those weapons for fights that you are struggling with, as you will find plenty more gear as you play though the game.
The same rule applies for food and elixirs; why would you be making them if you aren’t going to use them.
If you are struggling in a situation, don’t be afraid to throw everything you have at it. You can always go and explore The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s amazing open world to find more gear, more food, and more animals.
