The Xbox One backwards compatibility feature lets players play Xbox 360 games on their Xbox One console.

As a result, gamers will be able to re-experience the games from the previous generation that they spent hundreds of hours playing.

The best thing about this feature is that you won’t have to re-purchase the games to play them on the console, it’s free!

In order to use the backwards compatibility feature you will need to do the following:

  • Check to see if your game is backwards compatible.
  • Own either a digital copy or physical copy of the game.
  • Download or insert disk to play

In addition, gamers will be able to keep their Xbox 360 saves, DLC, achievements, and their Gamerscore, which is pretty awesome!

Another bonus feature is Xbox gamers who have an Xbox Gold Membership will be able to play their 360 games online with other gamers.

What is the Latest Xbox Feature About?

Originally when the Xbox One launched in 2013, the system didn’t support backwards compatibility or allow players to transfer their digital Xbox 360 games.

After the announcement about the latest Xbox console, fans looking to play their favorite 360 games were left disappointed.

As a result, Microsoft saw this as an opportunity and changed console history forever.

Xbox officially came out with the backwards compatibility feature at E3 2015 and made it available to the public by November 2015.

The backwards compatibility feature has unquestionably changed console history as we know it.

The CMO at Xbox for Microsoft, Mike Nichols, had this to say about Xbox 360 Games and introducing backwards compatibility to the Xbox One:

“We recognize that people have invested so much in terms of buying games and they have established friendships with people that they don’t want to leave behind.

And so, what we’ve set up to do with backwards compatibility is really remove that concern or alleviate that concern that somebody has to leave something behind.

It was the number-one most requested feature among Xbox 360 owners who did not upgrade to Xbox One yet. And so we’re really excited about starting the rollout of that in November.”

How Does Backwards Compatibility Work?

The technology behind Xbox One backwards compatibility is definitely an interest to gamers.

First of all, it wasn’t a simple task for Xbox engineers to design the Xbox 360 emulator that’s inside of the Xbox One, but they did it.

Here’s how backwards compatibility works on your Xbox One:

For physical copy:

  • Check to see if the Xbox 360 game is backwards compatible by looking at the in-game catalogue.
  • Next, insert the disc into the console and the console will begin to download the game onto the hard drive.
  • Now, once the game is finished downloading, you will still need to keep the disc in the console to play.
  • Finally, you’re ready to game on!

For digital copy:

  • Check to see if the digital version a player owns is available in the in-game catalogue first.
  • After the game is found, hit the “ready to install” option.
  • Wait for the game to download, and once that’s done it will show up in the player’s Game Library.
  • Finally, start playing!

In summary, it’s simple and accessible to gamers.
