Let’s look at some tips you can use to take advantage of the power play first.

Don’t change your thinking in the offensive zone during a Power play

Something that I can’t stress enough, don’t think you have to score on the power play every time in NHL 18. In fact, I highly recommend not changing your thinking at all in the offensive zone.
If you do, what ends up happening is that more often than not, you will end up forcing plays just because you think you have to score.

Ignore the clock during a Power Play

Ignore the clock! Don’t think of it in terms of you have two minutes. Think of it in terms of possessions. Most players facing non puck clearing opponents will have about two possessions on the power play. If you are playing someone who clears the puck down the ice instead of going on a rush, you might get another possession out of it.
The reason to change your way of thinking is so that you can relax. When people look at the clock they get antsy. Unless you are struggling immensely on defense, you’ll get two cracks at the offensive zone.

Use the Overload while on the Power Play

The Overload is a strategy option on the power play. If you don’t have it set to that, do it now. The Overload is not only great a full strength, it’s deadly on the power play. You’ll have a lot more time and space for you to setup that cross-ice pass. If the cross-ice pass doesn’t open up, you can always curl down low and cut into the slot for that short side wrister.
Unless you have a player with an 85 or above rated slap shot on defense, avoid the point shot. It can be blocked for a break away against or the goalie will just hold it, causing a faceoff and a chance of potentially losing a possession.
Use the Overload and don’t force it. Wait until it opens up, quality chances over quantity on the power play are far more valuable.

Setting up off the rush on the Power Play

Once you loose the puck and have to defend, it’s time to start the next possession. It looks similar to a rush on even strength. Just because you are up a man, it doesn’t change the scenario. It’s the same as if you were at even strength.
Skate down low and setup the Overload. Never just go for shots, because that’s the normal play. On the power play, you want to use the Overload—unless you are on a breakaway. The Overload is always what you want to do in the offensive zone, it’s going to give you peace of mind when you are trying to setup.

Tips to successfully kill off penalties

Now that we have talked about tips to take advantage of the power play, let’s talk about tips and strategies to kill of penalties in NHL 18.
First and foremost, getting control of the puck and dumping into your opponent’s zone is a quick and effective way to kill off your opponent’s power play. Using the corners to your advantage and using big hits to knock your opponent off the puck will help run the clock down.
Another way to successfully kill of penalties, is to get into your opponent’s passing lanes to intercept passes. This is a great way to defend effectively against your opponent’s power play cycle game. Block shots in front of the net with your defenders is another effective way to help successfully kill off your opponent’s power play. Be careful, you don’t want to injure any of your players.
Finally, the last tip I have to successfully kill of penalties in NHL 18 is to keep your team in formation. Don’t go chasing after the puck carrier, if you stay in formation and play your positions, it will go along way in helping to successfully kill off penalties in NHL 18.
