It’s Time For Super Mario Run!

Gamers can now play a Mario game on the go without cramming a 3DS in their pocket.

Most of us are used to controlling Mario in 3D settings, but this one is a good old-fashioned throwback in 2D.

Super Mario Run is a mash-up between 3D and 2D gameplay. It’s a side-scrolling, auto-running platformer video game—not too far out the ordinary for seasoned gamers.

The end goal of each level in Super Mario Run is to reach the flagpole as fast possible. You also need to collect as many coins as you can, avoiding anything in your path.

What Makes Super Mario Run Different?

Gamers use only one finger to help Mario jump. If you want to perform a high jump, just hold your finger on the screen longer. This was a classic control trick in older platformers like Donkey Kong, Castlevania, and Metroid, so old-school gamers should be at home.

You can also find a battle mode called Toad Rally, adding some variety to the otherwise straightforward nature of Super Mario Run. In Toad Rally, you can play against friends or new players online to beat their high scores. You do this by collecting as many coins as possible until the timer goes to zero, and it’s a fantastic nod to the core gameplay that made Mario a hit in the first place.

We love what Shigeru Miyamoto had to say about the game in a recent press release:

“We have created Super Mario Run to be perfect for playing on your iPhone, for the first time ever. Players will be able to enjoy a full-fledged Super Mario game with just one hand, giving them the freedom to play while riding the subway. Or my favorite, eating a hamburger.” – Shigeru Miyamoto

We couldn’t agree more, Mr. Miyamoto.

Other Nintendo Apps to Play Now

Before Super Mario Run, Nintendo dipped it’s toes into the App world with a little game called Miitomo.

Miitomo is a social networking app available on iOS and Android. Players connect with their friends, play games, take photos, and dress up their Mii’s to represent them in real life. But Nintendo is going for the core gamers with Super Mario Run.

There are more Nintendo mobile games to come by March 2017, including popular Nintendo franchises such as Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing. We’ll let you know when they hit the app store.

For now, check out the Super Mario Run App on iTunes and tell us what you think!
