Virtual puck drops on latest venture from Toronto Maple Leafs and WorldGaming Network
TORONTO, ON, October 1, 2018 – Today, the Toronto Maple Leafs and WorldGaming Network announced Leafs Gaming League, an online ladder for EA SPORTS NHL 19 fans and competitive gamers. Registration opens this Wednesday and players will have until December 2018 to qualify for the Grand Finals taking place on January 3, 2019 at Scotiabank Arena.
“MLSE is taking this first big step to bring structure and significance to Toronto’s NHL gaming community,” said Shane Talbot, Esports Manager, Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE). “We are excited to launch with a 1-vs-1 online ladder to ensure everyone has a chance to compete and we look forward to announcing additional details about our evolving strategy as the season progresses.”
From October 3 through to the 2018 holiday season, NHL 19 gamers can compete 1-vs-1 online to earn points and climb a virtual ladder. Ladder rankings will determine qualification for various tournaments and will give gamers access to exciting perks and rewards throughout the league.
“WorldGaming Network is honored and thrilled to be partnering with the Maple Leafs – one of the most iconic franchises in sports – in the esports scene,” said Wim Stocks, General Manager, WorldGaming Network. “More and more we are seeing the convergence between professional sports and esports and we know that Leafs Gaming League will resonate strongly with gaming fans and players. We are excited about hosting this competitive league and working with MLSE to unite the Maple Leafs, their fans and the top gamers from Leafs Nation.”
The Leafs Gaming League will also host Leafs Gaming Day on October 21 at Real Sports Bar and Grill in Toronto. The top 8 ranked players on the Leafs Gaming League ladder as of October 18, 2018, will be invited to compete in a tournament bracket showdown on the day. The winner of the bracket will then get to put their skills to the ultimate test as they go controller-to-controller versus the best NHL 19 celebrity gamer at the event. Further details will be announced at a later day.
