Injustice: Gods Among Us, developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, is one of my favorite fighting games in recent memory.

This past October, Cineplex held an in-theatre event where fans across Canada got to play and compete on the big screen.

That’s why when I heard that Ed Boon and the team at NetherRealm Studios were developing a sequel, Injustice 2, my jaw literally hit the floor.

A New Threat to Earth’s Existence

Injustice 2 continues the storyline from Injustice: Gods Among Us, and introduces new DC characters that join the fight.

It’s now five years after the defeat of the High Councilor, and Batman and his allies are working towards putting the pieces of society back together. While struggling against the remnants of Superman’s regime who seek to restore his rule, a new threat appears that will put Earth’s existence at risk.

This new threat is known as The Society, and is composed of several members of Superman’s failed regime. Batman must now form a new team of superheroes to combat Brainiac’s invading forces and save Earth’s entire existence.

Exciting New Gameplay

Injustice 2 retains various gameplay elements from the first game that made Injustice: Gods Among Us a fantastic fighting game.

Clashes, environment interaction, stage transitions, and character traits are all included in Injustice 2. In addition, the super metre returns – allowing you to perform enhanced special moves and unlock super moves.

By expanding the metre, you can perform new techniques such as an evasive forward roll. This now provides a way to overcome enemy keep-away tactics, or an air recovery, which allows you to escape an opponent’s combo early.

Even better, the majority of environmental attacks that were unavoidable in the first game, can now be blocked.

However, throwing a car is still unblockable.

Quite possibly the biggest new addition to Injustice 2’s gameplay is the Gear System.

  • Essentially, it’s a loot-dropping system where you can get equipment for your character and new costume pieces.
  • Much like a RPG, the Gear System rewards you after every match and allows you to strengthen your character’s ability and customize their look.
  • With the ability to increase your health, speed, defense, speed, and unlock new moves – it adds a whole new type of meaningful gameplay and strategy to Injustice 2.

A Massive Roster of New and Returning Characters

Injustice 2 is promised to contain the biggest DC roster of characters ever in a fighting game.

Fan favorites such as Batman, Flash, and Catwoman make their return. While new comers like Supergirl, Black Canary, and Brainiac make their debut.

At the time of the writing, there are 19 known characters that will be playable in Injustice 2 and new characters are consistently being announced.

It’s nice to see some of the more obscure DC characters included in Injustice 2, as Injustice: Gods Among Us pretty much contained most of DC’s notable figures. With the success of Scorpion in the first game, it will be interesting to see if Injustice 2 includes another Mortal Kombat character as DLC.

Bigger, better, and badder

With just a few months before launch, Injustice 2 looks to be shaping up to be even better than the first game.

With a cast of characters that is growing by the day, and new innovative gameplay – Injustice 2 is a game that you don’t want to miss come launch May 16, 2017.

Let me know in the comments section below what excites you most about Injustice 2!
