If you are new or just starting out with Mortal Kombat X, the game’s sheer number of characters to play as can be quite intimidating. It can be difficult knowing where to start and which character to focus on. Read more about the best Mortal Kombat XL characters for beginners.
If you are having problems finding a character to choose to start out with, I’m here to help you choose a character to get started with. Any of these characters will help you get the hang of Mortal Kombat X’s mechanics and give you a fighting chance against your opponents.
Kano is very opportunistic, he is extremely adept in combat and has proven to be a challenge for even the more skilled fighters. Kano’s walk and run speed is pretty average, his start up is kind of long but then he gets moving pretty quick.
Kano is a simple character who is generally defensive and doesn’t have a lot of moves, and is a great choice for players looking to become acquainted with the fighting game staple of cancelling moves, thanks to his move called the Kano Ball.
It’s a long-range attack that is very similar to that of Blanka in the Street Fighter games. The Kano Ball is a great way to put pressure on your opponent, while attacking from a distance. It is particularly potent against opponents when used together with one of his combos.
One of the things I like most about Kano is his dependence on weapons rather than special powers. He very often uses his signature Butterfly Knives in combat, whether he throws them at the opponent or uses them in hand-to-hand combat.
Scorpion is a great first step for beginning Mortal Kombat X players. He has a straightforward selection of special attacks and combos, and is a character to help those new to Mortal Kombat X understand the game’s basic mechanics.
Scorpion’s Spear technique is the perfect way to setup your opponent up for a combo. Even if they are halfway across the screen, they will be brought within range and stunned. Follow this up by executing a sequence of moves to take advantage of your opponent’s weakened state.
Scorpion’s Teleport is another great move for beginners. It’s executed by the standard quarter-circle-back-movement and causes Scorpion to switch to the opposite side of the screen he is attacking from. Be weary though, an experienced player will be able to punish the overuse of Scorpion’s basic moves.
Once you have mastered Scorpion, if you are looking for a more defensive style check out Sub-Zero.
Erron Black is a newcomer to the Mortal Kombat franchise, but his engaging play style and unique design make him a great beginning character for many. His move set centres around the use of guns, which makes him a great choice for beginners as it keeps the play away with zoning-based tactics.
Though Mortal Kombat X’s gameplay is largely focused on close ranged combat, with the right moves, Erron can be an effective exception to the rule. The main idea behind zoning is to keep your opponent where you want them, by using Erron’s Caltrops you can do just this.
It’s important to remember that although the damage might not be as much as you want, it’s the idea that you can get your opponent into a position that is most beneficial to you. Erron also has some very potent tools to quickly make up distance to catch your opponent off guard. The Sand Slide dropkick and the Stand Trap command throw are both essential parts of any gamer’s arsenal while playing as Erron Black.
Another newcomer to Mortal Kombat X, Cassie Cage is the daughter of Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade. She has many moves inspired by her parents and many new ones. She is a great choice for beginners, as she is fast and responsive.
This makes her a difficult character to play against as many of her combos have both high and low attacks, which calls for your opponent to block considerably more. Cassie has a variety of special moves such as the Glow Kick, which is a strong anti-air attack.
To extend any of Cassie’s combos further, try using the Getaway Flip. I must warn you though, if this move is blocked, it will leave you open for a hit that can do quite a bit of damage.
