One of the world’s most viewed annual esports event is beginning again shortly, with 24 of the best League of Legends teams from around the world travelling to China for the World Championships. After a grueling season and an intense qualification process, those twenty four teams have all been decided setting the stage for what is traditionally one of the premier esports events of the entire calendar year. The action will be spread out over a month beginning on September 23rd and not concluding until November 4th.

The tournament will commence with a play in stage for the 12 lowest seeded teams in the tournament. For the first stage, the teams will be randomly sorted into 4 groups of 3 and play the other two teams in their group, eliminating the bottom team. The teams that emerged first in their groups are then randomly matched against teams that finished second in other groups in an elimination series meaning only four of the initial 12 teams from this stage will advance to the rest of the tournament.

This will commence the group portion of the event, where teams will again be sorted into four groups this time each holding four teams. For both the play in stage discussed above and the group stage, the teams will be sorted into groups live on an official Riot Games broadcast on September 12th, at 5 a.m. PST/ 8 a.m. EST. The specifics are hard to explain, but thankfully Riot created an info graphic to help make it easier to understand.

In the group stage teams will play a double round robin, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the final portion of the event while the other eight are sent home empty handed.

The tournament will conclude with a traditional 8 team single elimination bracket, with teams that finished first in their group receiving advantageous seeds. The matches will be best of fives, the only best of five action we get to see from the event other than the final matches of the play in stage, despite that being League of Legends most popular competitive format. The entirety of the formatting can be a little bit confusing at times, making this infographic Riot made particularly helpful.

Korea enters the tournament as the regional favourite, with none of their teams being forced to play in the play stage they are the acknowledged kings of League of Legends. One team all League fans are familiar with will be returning to World’s from the region this year, SK Telecom lead by superstar Lee ‘Faker’ Sang-hyeok. Although they qualified for the tournament as the second best team from Korea, the honour of first belonging to Longzhu Gaming, they have consistently reached and emerged victorious in World’s finals making them an automatic tournament favourite. A full list of the teams competing at the event is included at the bottom of this article.

A whole year of professional League of Legends boils down to this one month of action, it won’t be something you want to miss. We’ll be covering all of the action, and you can watch it all live yourself on Riot’s official page.
